The Making of John Lewis’ Bear & Hare Advert
For those of you living in the UK animation talk in recent weeks has been dominated by one thing: the Christmas 2103 advert from famous retailer John Lewis. Christmas advertising often stirs up a lot of interest here in the UK but this advert has really got people talking! The simple, traditional-style animation tells the story of a rather world-weary bear who has never seen Christmas. Thanks to an ingenious gift, delivered to him by his hare friend, bear awakes just in time to share in the Christmas celebration with the other animals. Recently John Lewis released a behind-the-scenes look at how the idea came about on YouTube so we thought you’d like to take a look and see how one of this season’s most talked about animations came into being…
The creative team used a combination of 2D and stop-motion animation to create an environment that is both fresh and nostalgic at the same time. The YouTube video reveals the painstaking detail that was used in the creation of the models and the hand-drawn animations undertaken by Disney animator Aaron Blaise, a real veteran of 2D hand-drawn animations with some 25 years’ experience in the field. As he explains, very few studios use these traditional techniques anymore so it’s interesting to see this style of animation on TV screens again.
